I have this midlife thing going on. It's one of these things were I just am not sure of anything, but sure of everything. I still feel like I need to bend over backward, but like everyone owes me something as well. well, darn. Maybe some of you know what I'm talking about. Summer schedule has changed. My kids got out of school and I decided that I would start my work day at 6:30 am. I can tell you that I don't start anything at that hour unless I haven't actually finished something. You getting what I'm dropping here? So, in order to be at my desk at 6:30 am, I actually have to get up somewhere between 5am and 5:30am. This might have been a good time to be getting home, but not so good to be getting up, at least back when I was quite a bit younger. I had to make myself get to bed earlier than midnight. For a full week I couldn't actually get to sleep until midnight. But, now, after I've had a few weeks to settle into this crazy idea, I'm falling asleep on the couch by 10:00.

So, while I've adjusted my internal clock, I decided that the swimming was going a bit too slowly. I'm wondering just how long it will take for my poor lungs to get used to doing something other than standing still.

I've started to run.

Here's a brief look at the history of running according to me:

I took a weight-lifting/running class in high school. Keeping in mind that I like to stay up late and not so good at getting up early- this class was the last period of the day. The weight lifting part was great, and I think it was 3x/week. The running part reminded me why I never got along well with soccer, and it was 2x/week. Running during the winter months in North Dakota is a challenge in it's own right and I suppose I could lay blame to my short running interest because of frozen nose hairs, or coughing up ice crystals from deep in the depths of my overworked lungs, but truthfully, I usually had to walk most of the distance. The four mile run caused me to actually return to school after the dismissal bell had already sounded. Cars were leaving the parking lot as I was dragging my sorry ass back up the road to the school. I swear, they just left me to die in the fields that day.

Well, I don't have to wheeze, cough and pick ice out of my nose anymore. I've picked up these dandy running shoes and there was a moment of total elation as I drove off from the shop back home. I was totally anticipating how it would feel to put the past behind me and get on without the couch under my butt. Not that I'm a couch lounger, but I am quite out of shape.

I'm self motivating for a 5k run. I'm already much further along than I was those many years ago in high school. I hope that my swimming is improved when my lungs and heart stop sputtering about so much.

I will keep you all posted.

Today's run was 8 mins jogging/ 3 mins walk/ 11 mins jogging. Sunday I'm shooting for a straight 20 mins jog without any walking, which should clock me in around the 2 mile mark.

I can even talk about km and mi in the same post. How American of me.
